2010 Seminar programme

BSSM - The State of the Art in Modern Stress and Strain Analysis

Synopsis:

The measurement of strain and other sensing activities in engineering takes many forms. The BSSM has been at the forefront in promoting good practice in this field of endeavour for over 40 years through training and certification, and by dissemination via conferences and seminars. Measurement technology and sensing methods have advanced significantly over this period and the BSSM has concerned itself primarily with helping engineers to keep pace with these changes. The objective of this seminar is to showcase a range of measurement technologies, how they have advanced, their application to industrial and other engineering problems and how their development has helped meet the challenges posed. The brief introduction will give a flavour of what has been done and also what it is possible to do in the future.

CoGDEM - New Developments in Gas Sensing

Sponsored by: the Electronics, Sensors & Photonics KTN, the Council for Gas Detection & Monitoring (CoGDEM) and the Gas Analysis & Sensing Group (GASG)

11.00-11.10:

Networks supporting the gas sensing community
Dr Simon Aliwell, ESP KTN

11.10-11.35:

Nanomaterials and ppb detection in urban air quality networks
Dr John Saffell, Alphasense

SWIG - Challenges and Future Needs for Sensors in the Water Sector

The Water Sector faces significant environmental, economic and societal challenges over the next 20 years.  Meeting these will require efficiency improvements, rationalisation of water use and new approaches to asset management. The development and adoption of new instrumentation and sensor technology will be fundamental to meeting these challenges.

This workshop takes a look at these issues from both a water company and the environmental regulator’s view and explores the role SWIG can have in supporting end users and the supply chain in meeting these challenges and benefiting from the opportunities they bring.

UKIVA - Advances in Imaging CMOS sensors

Members of the UKIVA will demonstrate the huge variety of sensor capabilities that can be achieved using different architectures of CMOS imaging sensor. These include single sensors to huge multi-megapixel arrays, from very fast to very long exposure rates, from linear to log/lin and Very High Dynamic Range, from full frame to selected area read-out only and comparisons of CMOS with CCD systems...UKIVA will present an overview of recent advances in imaging CMOS sensors

WISIG - Wireless Sensing Demonstrator Showcase 2010

Call for Participation

SCOPE

Early prototyping has proven to be an essential methodology to evaluate wireless sensing systems. Furthermore, it offers an excellent way to assess the applicability of the technology against real user requirements and to promote its market adoption. Building on the last two years’ successful events, the Wireless Sensing Interest subGroup (WiSIG) of the Electronics, Sensors, Photonics Knowledge Transfer Network (ESP KTN) is organising a Demonstrator Showcase to provide an opportunity for industry and academia to display technology, platforms, and realistic applications of wireless sensing. The purpose of the event is to raise awareness of the current state of the art and encourage future collaborations among the exhibitors and attendees.
